The son of a Coimbatore farmer who once struggled for even two meals a day is now the owner of the world’s largest thyroid testing company.
Arokiaswamy Velumani was born in a poor family. His father was a poor farmer, he did not own land. Due to poverty, his father could not even provide him with clothes and shoes in his childhood. Arokiswamy Velumani had faced many difficulties in his childhood. Today he is the owner of Thyocare Technologies Limited, the world’s largest company in conducting thyroid tests.
Today their business is in many countries. Apart from thyroid, his company also conducts other blood tests. This company has 1,122 outlets all over the world. Thyocare has several outlets in India as well as in Nepal, Bangladesh and Middle Eastern countries.
His mother used to save 50 rupees a week when he was a child. She used to sell buffalo milk. She used the saved amount to educate her children. For many years, the mother took care of the household expenses. He completed his schooling in the village. After this, he went to the city to complete his graduation. He completed all his studies at government schools and colleges.
He completed his B.Sc at the age of 19. Then started working in a small pharma company in Coimbatore. Here his salary was Rs. 150/-. The salary was very less but he still used to send 100 rupees to his mother at home, and somehow used to run his own expenses for 50 rupees. Life was taking his endurance test. After some time that company itself was shut down. He became unemployed. There is a saying that whatever happens happens for good. After the closure of the company, he applied as a lab assistant at Bhabha Atomic Research Center. He got selected. He completed his further studies while working in Bhabha. Later he became a scientist.
After working in Bhabha for 14 years, Arokiswamy thought of opening his own company. He got married to Sumathi Velumani, who was a bank employee. When he opened the company, his wife was his first employee. His wife left her job for the company. The first lab was opened in Mumbai. He opened this company with his Provident Fund of Rs 1 lakh.
Arokiswami built his company for the good of the people. He knew that most of the people of India are poor. That’s why he opened this company to make the test facility accessible to the people at the least cost. He told that in the initial days only two samples came daily. He worked day and night for this. Gradually, he made his business model different from others. He got a lot of benefits due to the low cost of the test and access to more people.
The revenue of his company Thyrocare in the year 2020 was Rs 474 crore. There was an increase of 51% in profit. According to Forbes India, his company provides the cheapest healthcare facilities in the whole world. Arokiswamy took up the challenge in that phase of life when people just want to spend life comfortably. He opened the company by investing his PF money. This true story of his is no less than an inspiration to the youth.
